RESUMO

Modulation of absorbance and emission is key for the design of chiral chromophores. Accessing a series of compounds absorbing and emitting (circularly polarized) light over a wide spectral window and often toward near-infrared is of practical value in (chir)optical applications. Herein, by late-stage functionalization on derivatives bridging triaryl methyl and helicene domains, we have achieved the regioselective triple introduction of para electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents. Extended tuning of electronic (e.g., E1/2red -1.50 V → -0.68 V) and optical (e.g., emission covering from 550 to 850 nm) properties is achieved for the cations and neutral radicals; the latter compounds being easily prepared by mono electron reductions under electrochemical or chemical conditions. While luminescence quantum yields can be increased up to 70% in the cationic series, strong Cotton effects are obtained for certain radicals at low energies (λabs ∼ 700-900 nm) with gabs values above 10-3. The open-shell electronic nature of the radicals was further characterized by electron paramagnetic resonance revealing an important spin density delocalization that contributes to their persistence.

RESUMO

In essentially one-pot, using Ir- and Pd-catalysis, tris(arene)-functionalized cationic [4]helicenes are synthesized with full regioselectivity and enantiospecificity starting from a trivial precursor (17 examples). This poly-addition of aryl groups improves key optical properties, that is, fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes. Electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence signatures are observed up to the far-red domain, in particular with additional arenes prone to aggregation.

RESUMO

We describe herein a molecular design to generate circularly polarized thermally activated delayed fluorescence emitters in which chiral bicarbazole donors are connected to acceptor units via a rigid 8-membered cycle and how the nature of the donor and acceptor units affect the photophysical and chiroptical properties.

RESUMO

Regioselective access to heterohelicenes through the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of sydnones with arynes is described. Novel access to sydnones and poly(hetero)aromatic aryne precursors allowed the introduction of chemical diversity over multiple positions of the helical scaffolds. The origins of the unconventional regioselectivity during the cycloaddition steps was systematically investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, unveiling the key features that control this reactivity, namely, face-to-face (π···π) or edge-to-face (C-H···π) interactions, primary orbital interactions and distortion from coplanarity in the transition structures (TSs) of the transformation. From the library of 24 derivatives synthesized, a pyridyl containing derivative displayed reversible, red-shifted, pH-triggered chiroptical switching properties, with CPL-sign reversal. It is found that protonation of the helicene causes a change of the angle between the electric and magnetic dipole moments related to the S1 → S0 transition, resulting in this rare case of reversible CPL sign inversion upon application of an external stimulus.

RESUMO

Strained conjugated nanohoops are attractive synthetic targets due to the bending of their π-system, which leads to intriguing optoelectronic properties, among others. By incorporating non-mirror-symmetric aromatic panels, chiral nanohoops can be obtained. We herein present a strategy to enantiopure nanohoops by racemic resolution through chiral derivatization of diketone-embedded hoops. The resulting diketo[n]CPPs (n = 6, 7) contain two stereogenic carbon atoms each and possess high fluorescence quantum yields paired with circularly polarized luminescence. These are versatile precursors to chiral dibenzo[a,e]pentalene-based nanohoops DBP[n]CPPs with antiaromatic character and ambipolar electrochemical behavior. Due to their strained structures the DBP[n]CPPs do not racemize at room temperature, which is supported by high calculated isomerization barriers. X-ray crystallographic investigations on the DBP[n]CPPs and their precursors as well as DFT calculations provide insight into the build-up of strain energy during the synthetic transformations.

RESUMO

Mono- and di-boranil-substituted helicenes were prepared by BF2 -borylation of the corresponding anils, readily synthesized by condensation of 2-amino- and 2,15-diamino-helicenes with 4-(diethylamino)salicylaldehyde. After enantiomeric resolution using HPLC, their chiroptical properties including circularly polarized fluorescence in solution and in PMMA films were investigated and rationalized with the help of NMR, X-ray and quantum-chemical calculations.

RESUMO

π-Extended helicenes constitute an important class of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with intrinsic chirality. Herein, we report the syntheses of π-extended [7]helicene 4 and π-extended [9]helicene 6 through regioselective cyclodehydrogenation in high yields, where a "prefusion" strategy plays a key role in preventing undesirable aryl rearrangements. The unique helical structures are unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystal structure analysis. Compared to the parent pristine [7]helicene and [9]helicene, these novel π-extended helicenes display significantly improved photophysical properties, with a quantum yield of 0.41 for 6. After optical resolution by chiral high-performance liquid chromatography, the chiroptical properties of enantiomers 4-P/M and 6-P/M are investigated, revealing that the small variation in helical length from [7] to [9] can cause an approximately 10-fold increase in the dissymmetry factors. The circularly polarized luminescence brightness of 6 reaches 12.6 M-1 cm-1 as one of the highest among carbohelicenes.

RESUMO

Despite the impressive number of interlocked molecules described in the literature over the past 30 years, only a few stereoselective syntheses of mechanically chiral rotaxanes have been reported so far. In this study, we present the first diastereoselective synthesis of mechanically planar chiral [1]rotaxanes, that has been achieved using the active template Cu-mediated alkyne-azide cycloaddition reaction. This synthetic method has been applied to the preparation of a [1]rotaxane bearing a labile stopper that can then be substituted without disruption of the mechanical bond. This approach paves the way for the synthesis of a wide variety of mechanically planar chiral [1]rotaxanes, hence allowing the study of the properties and potential applications of this class of interlocked molecular architectures.

RESUMO

Molecular designs merging circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (CP-TADF) using the concept of chiral perturbation appeared recently as a cornerstone for the development of efficient CP-organic light emitting diodes (CP-OLED). Such devices could strongly increase the energy efficiency and performances of conventional OLED displays, in which 50% of the emitted light is often lost due to the use of antiglare filters. In this context, herein, ten couples of enantiomers derived from novel chiral emitter designs are reported, exhibiting CPL, TADF, and aggregation induced enhancement emission properties (AIEE). Representing the first structure properties relationship investigation for CP-TADF materials, this thorough experimental and theoretical work highlights crucial findings on the key structural and electronic parameters (isomerism, nature of the carbazole substituents) governing the synergy between CPL and TADF properties. To conclude this study, the first top emission CP-OLED is elaborated as a new approach of generating CP light in comparison with classical bottom-emission CP-OLED architecture. Indeed, the top-emission configuration represents the only relevant device architecture for future microdisplay applications. Thereby, in addition to offer molecular guidelines to combine efficiently TADF and CPL properties, this study opens new avenues toward practical applications for CP-OLEDs.
